I hear you, but I think the sentiment is misguided. It's asking the wrong

Questions. Amazon is a newcomer, not the incumbent. You can say it favors the big, but done right it creates opportunities for the small. Amazon is meant to be the beginning of a tech boom in NY, not the sum total of it. It's just the nature of big. That's what can do transformative things, and draw such interest as to demand a competitive bid process. That's what matters from the urban development angle. Anti trust issues are separate IMO. I agree that needs looking at in the info age. But it's not the issue here unless you think it impacts Amazon's viability as a partner.

The better questions are about the public investment itself. It often doesn't make sense with sports facilities, or single use projects like the olympics. This is a perpetual use project that IMO is very different from a stadium. There's a reason a furious bidding competition broke out. This was an unusual opportunity. It's ok to debate the wisdom of the investment, but all this "we stuck it to the man" bullshit smacks of demagoguery. The man - Bezos - doesn't care. Won't cost him a wink of sleep. But it could cost the neighborhood, the borough, the city, the state. Plenty.
